Title: Modules, do they work?
Post by: tino on May 20, 2018, 05:53:01 PM
Do they actually work still?

The documentation site seems to point you towards a menu which doesnt seem to exist any more

tino, I think you'll find a lot of copy and paste has gone on over there tbh, quite a lot needs updating to reflect the changes for the current versions.

I guessed as much, it was more do we have a working example TPmodule anywhere? I can see the downloads and shoutbox were meant to be modules but they have long since been integrated into the code base in various places so aren't what I would call modules anymore!

Not that I know of tino. Sorry.

Loads of stuff got lost when the site went down a few years ago, can't remember when or what happened exactly.  I suspect if there was any it was before that time.

I think there was plans to have a gallery module, and perhaps a blog, but can't say I ever saw them.  Only bloc would know the story on modules, but I haven't seen him pop in here for some time.

I tried the TPReviews module in modules section but its a incomplete zip archive, same as the other packages in that section.

I guess no one else has a copy installed somewhere other than here?

That would be a really useful mod if it worked, Dragoon is a pretty decent coder, and still over at SMF I think..   The modules started to become extinct around TP v0.9.8 by the looks of it.

Ok well hopefully someone has a old one somewhere ;)

About the TPReviews module:
I tried to get the module updated some time back, but Dragooon was busy with SMF stuff and was unable to work on the reviews module. It was a great tool for my site and there were/are lots of review articles on my install, but they can't display without an update to the code. There may be a copy of the zip in my files and I will take a look and post the package if one is found.
illori may have some insight on what Dragooon is currently doing over on SMF, she helped me with the issue when I was trying to contact Dragooon before.

This is the newest copy (7/26/15) that was in my files... there is an older version (02/27/14) if you need it.

Ken thanks for looking for this module, unfortunately the zip appears to be corrupt, and I can't extract it. Could you perhaps attach that older one for us to look at.  :)

EDIT:  Actually Ken, while on this subject, do you have any other modules sitting on your hard drive which we could take a look at as well please.  I'm pretty sure I don't have any.

Sorry about the first one Mick... try this file.

My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think the ShoutBox and Downloads modules were the only two that ever made it into the code. Others that you mentioned earlier were talked about, but were never coded.

Ken thanks, that one extracts ok.  I know your memory is fuzzy lol, but do you know if the version 2 of this module was adapted for SMF 2?  That older one is for SMF 1.1.x Thought I saw the use of $smcFunc mentioned in TPReviews2

Thanks for that Ken, it's given me enough to go on to work out how they were meant to work so I can create a new addon.

Unrelated to any which exist mind.

Mick, the number 2 in the zip file name might have been used as a way for me to keep two copies of the file in the same folder, so it may not have anything to do with a version name/number for the zip.
As for SMF 2, it was never adapted for that version of SMF, AFAIK.

Thanks tino.
... a request if you do publish a new version, it would be great if the new version could reconize the data/reviews from the old version.

Ken,

What can you do with the TPreview module? I read the TPreview topic but is does not make things clearer to me.

I also tried to install a version in a SMF 1 version but for some reason I cannot install TP 1.0
It looks like the installation went OK but the TP DB tables are not created.

Hi Fred, the link below is to an instructional article that I wrote back in 2010 for my members, giving them some insight on how the TPReviews module works. Hopefully you may find it to be a little useful, but please note that it is old and out of date, so many of the links are broken because I closed many of the pages that are linked.
The basic concept was an article system that is somewhat like the TP Articles system, but more tightly focused on groups of articles/reviews of things like movies, books, games or anything else that the forum admins and members wanted it to be about. One big part of the system was an index page(s) listing all the reviews, first in categories and then listing the articles/reviews within the category.

The admins would setup some categories and then the membership could post and interact with reviews in that category(s).

Welcome our Reviews Module! (https://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php?page=206)

Hope this helps, I'll try to answer any questions you might have.

Fred
Yes, the TP Articles system would work for something like the reviews modules because the basics are more or less the same. The two main differences are in the index page that is included in the reviews module and the posting procedure that a member would use in the reviews module as compared to the TP Articles system. The reviews module can make it a bit easier for an admin to keep his/her members focused on precisely where they wanted to content to be posted, as well as the type (categories) of content. Both those functions can be worked out with TP Articles, it's just that the reviews module has a lot of the nuts and bolts already in place, so you would only need create a few categories and post a link to the reviews index page and then you're good to go.

Used the Wayback Machine to look up Our FamilyForum and found this reviews category page from June 14 2008.
It's kind of plain in this image because each of the categories had nice images to match, but those got left out in the WB Machine rendering. Example: ... the movies category had a big tub of popcorn.  :)

It's showing a single category page for my install of the reviews module, the list eventually took two pages IIRC.

Yes that's an interesting module! I see the possibilities for my brothers website!

After I left the project the code have been re-written so the original modules won't work anymore.

Other than that, it should be quite possible to make new ones based on existing: TP Downloads for example. But again, it might be too much changed for it to act as a example.

Seeing as SMF 2.1 never got off the ground(its been 8-10 years now) and SMF 2.0 is still the standard, it would make sense to base a complete rewrite of TP for SMF 2. But I doubt anyone is interested in picking it up :) although it would be best to actually get among others, modules to work properly.
