Title: Question
Post by: Kenny on October 23, 2006, 02:08:03 AM
Well, most of you will think im dumb for asking this but im kinda new to SMF and i want a frontpage that i can customize 100% myself, and someone recommended Tiny Portal. So i was wondering what do i do to get it working? Im using 1.1 RC3 and i was just wondering do i just have to upload his through the admin panel?

Appreciate it, Thanks :)

Yup through the admin panel

Download the latest copy of TP using the downloads section (http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=tpmod;dl)

- set your forum at Default theme (default core)
- then go to packages manager and install TP via there

Dont forget ot set the forum to default 1st

After it installs then come back to the downloads section and install some cool TP ENABLED themes....normal SMF themes wont work with TP, u will need the special themes from the download section here - loads of cool ones here

oh and also i forgot to mention :

I hope you dont have a lot of mods installed?

Because they could cause problems installing TP since it is a big mod and changes a lot of things.

So if other mods have already changed files, it may not be able to find the code and give Failure notification in package manager

but still worth a try

and if it dosent work u can always do a manual install

I have 5, Emailflash, K-Detection, Profilecomments, Shoutbox and Shop.

So can i just uninstall, then try to install again after. Because if i deleted the shop all my members lose there points and stuff :P

oh i would highly recommend removing the shoutbox one before install

since TP already has a built in shoutbox

leave the rest and try to install - see if it works - pray it does cos then it will save u the headache of a manual install, eventhough its not VERY hard

Go to the admin section of SMF. Make sure that you have the default theme selected. Go to "Packages." Select "Download Packages" Look for "Upload a Package." Browse to where TP is on your computer and upload it. When it finishes, you should see "Apply Mod." Click that link. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Then investigate the new features. You'll see a section in your side panel labeled "Tiny Portal." Click the links add stuff. Play around. See what each thing does. After you've messed around with it for at least one full evening if you can't figure it out then come back and ask questions. Tell us what you want, what you tried and what you got. That'll help us to help you a whole lot.

Well, i used it at a friends so i know how to do almost everything. Change boxes and all that, but we couldnt figure out how to make a homepage, like saying FORUM, FAQ's, STAFF, like you guys have.

EDIT:I want to add a custom template i made, like this one below.

Title: Re: Question

no, i dont know how to install it, or get it working.

I told you how to install it, in great detail. Look at my post that starts with "Go to the admin section of SMF." Follow the instructions there. I've gone through each step for you.

There's no point in explaining how to do something else if you don't have an installation to try out what we tell you.

Title: Re: Question
Post by: akulion on October 23, 2006, 05:06:42 AM
if its a theme u created urself - then it is best to ask one of the theme guys here on TP to do a TP conversion for u

and only then install it  otherwise if u use a standart SMF theme with TP then u will end up with everything missing and going crazy on ya

I have a website and in that site is the forum, I just uploaded my site and I have the forum inside a folder with a link to it from my main site. It really depends on how you have your forum setup on your server.

The structure, like for example

http://yourdomain.com/forum or is it http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php

if we knew that maybe we could help you better.

That one will not be easy to do unless you don't have an active forum at this time. Other wise you would have to edit the database, to have a website on the front end of the forum.

Great, you will learn several useful things about how to manage your forum now with TP installed :)

If you want more answers, you have a lot of threads in the TPSupport and Development forum :)
And in the Block Code and Snippets board you have a lot of fun addons for your blocks and articles

The problem comes when you have a index.php and an index.html both in the same root directory you most likely will have problems. Your forum is not new so you have a database and things in there point to yourdomain/index.php, If it is not a rush I will look into this area more for you and get back to you on it.
