Setup a test subdomain with no mods, just plain forum, and still has problems. I think you might be right in it might be a bug in SMF...

It might be that thumbnails can't be made...do you know what memory limit PHP has on your server?

I have to say you're probably dead on here, Bloc - bringing an image down from that size to thumbnail would place a harsh load on server memory. A shared host isn't setup to do that. I've seen some VPS accounts which couldn't reliably do that.

The usual 8mb will not cut it..not over 1000-1100 pixles in height anyway, but that may vary of course.

Especially if smaller sizes seem to be working. That sounds like the ticket.
