One issue at a time thechitt. You will get frustrated if you don't do this. One thing you need to know, is that TP is a mod for SMF. It is not bridged like other portals and CMS's. This means, that TP lives where SMF does. So if you're forum is at www.yoursite.com/forum/ TP is going to be in the same place. If you want TP to be a frontpage at www.yoursite.com then you'll need to move your forum to the root of your site. To move your forum you can simply move the files in your FTP and then download and run the repair_settings.php file you can get from the SMF site to fix the settings that SMF needs. Then you can use TP as your frontpage.

Thank you all very much for your time and efforts......There is not 1 thing i understand about the post above.

thechitt,

I have looked at your site.  It appears that you have SMF and TP installed correctly and it now appears that you have the correct TP version of the Helios-Multi theme up and running.  I have also noticed that you have blocks in the left panel, a sitemap block in the right panel, and a block in the top panel called  "RSS Feed".  This tells me that what you have done is working correctly so far.  Therefore, so far, you have done well.

In your first post in this topic, you mentioned that you want to setup a Front Page for your Forum that is different from your Forum page.  However, we have no idea how you want your Front Page to appear.  The capability exists for you to be able to use the Front Page of your Forum  to access other areas of your site, but most people choose to have the Forum, which contains both SMF and TP, setup like you have it now.

In other words, your current setup is ...
- root folder
-- Forum Folder (contains both SMF and TP)

This is a good setup and leaves your root folder open to place other things in the future, should you choose to do so.

Right now, you will notice that you have both a "Home" button and a "Forum" button on your forum.  At the present time, clicking either one will take you to the same page.  This is because you have not setup a Front Page for your Forum that is different than the Forum itself.  If that is what you want to do, then there are some steps that you can take to do that, and we can help you with that.  However, before we can tell you how to accomplish this, you have to tell us what you want to do, or how you want the Front Page to look.

As an example, I'm going to direct you to one of my live sites to take a look at what I'm talking about.  There are 3 url's I'm going to direct you to look at.  They are as follows ...

1.  http://talesofthehavenexpanse.com/

2.  If you click the "Forum" button there, it will take you to another page, which is ---> http://talesofthehavenexpanse.com/SMF-1/

3.  Finally, if you click the "Forum" button here, it will take you to a 3rd page, which is ---> http://talesofthehavenexpanse.com/SMF-1/index.php?action=forum

#1 above is just a page in the root of my website and has nothing to do with my Forum, except that it has a button that links to the Forum.  #2 is the actual Front Page of the Forum that I have setup.  Finally, #3 is the Forum page itself.  You will note that all 3 of these pages are different.

On your site, at the present time, #2 and #3 are the same page.  If what you want to do is to have #2 and #3 be different then you can do this, but in order for us to be able to help you do it, we need to know how you want #2 to appear.

If you can give us this information, we can direct you to the correct instructions that will tell you how to make changes so that #2 will appear different than #3, but we have no way of doing this until you tell us what you want.

I hope that I have made this clear for you.  Help us to help you.

ok...........the way i would like my forum to look is as follows...AND AGAIN THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR THE HELP...I would like my forum set up,so when people log on,they come to a page with blocks on both sides of the page, and a middle section for me to put things such as news, current events....that sort of thing.

I would like a link on this page,so when it is clicked ,it brings you to another page, which would be the forum .I hope this explains what i am trying to do.

i have left a link of a friends forum to show you how i want mine.

http://www.freedom2poker.net/Poker1/index.php?PHPSESSID=e60c9d4cd7a979a7cdc9c6b348bf76f1;www

they do not have blocks on both sides of that front page,BUT I DO WANT BLOCKS ON both sides of mine

G6Cad

The blocks you dont want to show for guest ( or any other membergroup ) place them on one side, and then change the blocks permission to what group you want them to show for.
You have to edit every block as the permissions for them are in the individual block settings.

You as admin will see all blocks at all times.

thechitt

this is my problem ...i dont know how to create the blocks..everytime i try to make 1...it does not work..is there a pictorial here anywhere i can look at.

and i want all my blocks to show all the time.

i just ..dont know how to make ,place,or anything else that has to do with blocks

Hi thechitt,

It may seem like a daunting task, but the only way to learn how to use TP is to read the docs and start using it.  Everyone here had to go through the same process at the beginning.  If we just do it for you, you won't learn and we are more interested in helping you learn how to use it than we are in doing it for you.  By doing this, you will eventually know as much about TP as we do.

So, let's get started.  I am going to direct you to some links that will help you begin to learn how TP works.

1.  Docs for TP 1.05

2.  Docs Board

If you will look at these documentation pages and click the links you will see there, you will see what you need to do to create blocks, the Front Page, and a lot of other things that you can do with TP.  As always, we are available to answer any specific question you might have about what was written but the best thing for you to do is to start reading and applying what you have read to your own page by just doing.

Do some reading, and make some adjustments in your site, and if things don't work the way you think they should, come back here and ask us for more help.

Sounds like it's time for you to start studying up in the Docs boards here on TP.  ;)

It's also good to explore the TP admin CP on your site to start to learn how the various controls interact with each other.
Example; is the panel for your right side blocks turned on?

EDIT: Whoops... ZarPrime beat me!
