wierd idea-Dynamic Generated Menu Buttons

i was wondering if it would be possible to use php to dynamicly generate the menu gifs for non preseant menu buttons instead of the broken image icon, similarly i would guess to how the button generator works
and if so how would you do this and would it have any real effect on the servers performance?
