Site Owner: Ken & Kay Kimbrell
Site Designer: Ken... with lots of help from the TinyPortal Staff!
Site Genre: Family; membership is open to family members and close friends.
Family news, with lots of photo essays about trips, visits and other family events.
For several years we've maintained our family's website (HTML only at first) as a way to help us keep in touch and up to date on family news because we are so spread out over the entire US... and the rest of the world, we also have Family members and Friends in several different countries.
Adding SMF/TP (August 2006) and remaking the HTML site into 'Our FamilyForum' has proved to be an excellent move and it continues to improve over time.

Likes: Great support from the SMF team... and even better support here on TP.
Dislikes: By having the membership restricted to just family and a very small group of friends growing the member base is a very slow process that also gives us problems with getting the activity level up in the forum.. but, we are making progress.  O0

Enjoy... Ken.
Title: Our FamilyForum [Update]
Post by: Ken. on December 03, 2008, 06:51:50 PM
Much has happened since this was originally posted almost two years ago!
For one thing, I've managed to learn a little more about building and running an SMF/TP forum and along the way the Team here on TinyPortal was kind enough to elevate and include me in their ranks.

As part of my activities in helping out on the TP Team I’ve maintained several ‘test’ installs of SMF/TP in order to have some place to try out new versions of both TP and SMF along with all kinds of Mods and add-ons but I’ve also used my live site, Our FamilyForum, for lots of testing as well and although its received lots of abuse over the past several months it continues to serve well.
TinyPortal is one tough piece of software and so is SMF.

Likes: TinyPortal is still at the top of my list because of the article system, the blocks and the great TP support team. ;)
Dislikes: None worth the mention.

hey this is great! I've had a forum for my family for a few years now - it's just easier to share information and plan events that way.

I like that you have individual pages for each 'child'. I didn't want to explore too far since it's for your family, though. Are those pages just individual photo galleries or did you use TP articles?
Title: Re: Our FamilyForum
Post by: Ken. on January 30, 2009, 06:38:14 PM
Thanks for the comments immaturity and you're welcome to look at any part of the forum including the gallery and pages.

The pages for each child (and some for the grandkids) are TP articles for the most part although you may find some html pages if you drill down far enough. The site started several years back as strictly html pages but once I started using SMF & TP those pages have slowly been changed to TP articles... but there are still lots of them that need to be converted.
Title: [Update] Our FamilyForum
Post by: Ken. on April 15, 2009, 12:56:23 AM
Our FamilyForum (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php) continues to evolve over time and I've been somewhat lax about posting updates... so this one is a little overdue.

In the past couple of weeks we've been fortunate to have Les (TP Staff Member) help with some design and layout features and his work has been outstanding.

Here's two examples: ... these two themes are not currently available on Our FamilyForum.
Topaz Design by Bloc (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php) ... our current default theme and Les did the logo work.

Callisto Theme by Bloc (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php?;theme2) ... more of Les's work can be seen in the top banner as well as board icons

And if you would like to see the TinyPortal Article system in all its glory then take a look at This Page (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php?page=110)

Enjoy... Ken.

The family crest was designed by my brother Lee some years back and if you look carefully you can see elements of our families history throughout the design.

 That's what I'm saying!

You are right Zetan, my 'default' theme changes 1-2 times a month and like G6 I do a lot of testing on the site... even though I have several test sites the live site ends up being my fav test vehicle.  :)

Our FamilyForum has just been updated to SMF2 RC2 & TinyPortal v1.0 beta5.

We are currently running the "X-Mas design by DzinerStudio" theme with some nice graphics that Les worked up for the site... we think it looks good.

Over time the live site has become a testbed more and more for SMF/TP, but we still have some lively content with our latest being the "Our Family Forum Holiday Trek 2009 (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php?topic=2042.0)"

That little two week Trek generated over 700 posts in "Our Cancer Research Team (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php?board=34.0)" board and that's a lot for our little forum.  ;D

Not yet swampy.
A few of the TinyPortal Team members are running the b5 Alpha on their live sites, me being one in that group, but most Team members and Alpha testers are still only running b5 on test sites.

Hi,

Becuse of the error on the front page from the link in your first post here I did'nt go any further. For example I did not click your home button. I went back  and  I did click home and it loads ok like others have said after I posted.

QuoteAnd if you would like to see the TinyPortal Article system in all its glory then take a look at
Then you

have the link saying 'watch this', thats what I clicked Ken and got the error:

Database Error is in a dark long box..then it says under that:

Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.

Which I did.

Thanks for catching those broken links tunkadata.  O0

They've been removed now.

EDIT: As to your original question; The version of TP that is currently in place on the FF is an earlier 'Alpha' version, but it will be replaced later today with our most up to date Alpha version. As a visitor you won't see really big differences in the pages that are displayed, but admins will see huge improvements and changes in this release.

We don't have a date set for public release, but it's getting closer now.

Site looks great Ken! The frontpage with the butterfly goes well with the new theme. I think maybe a little color change in your board graphics on boardindex is in order. That light blue doesn't quite fit with my eyes though. Looks like a fun place to hang out, you got all the bells and whistles. :)

Morning all.

Ken, just noticed strange rendering issue on your site.  There appears to be part of a black bar above the forums /top right.

Also, when in the forums etc, the forum button doesn't remain highlighted,  Instead the home button is  highlighted.

I'm not picking fault, it's just you might not see it if you're using a different browser.  I'm using IE8, and checked this on two PC's.

Screen grabs attached.

Thanks for catching the issue.
It seems to be showing up in most browsers, I'll see what can be done about it.

No problem.  I wasn't sure you'd seen those two problems. ;)

Thanks for reading our 'terms' lurkalot.  O0
Yes, we do have fairly tight membership requirements.

As for the Arcade... all of our arcade files come from SMFArcade, including the skin that we use, but if you're looking for new and different games you may wish to check out this site:
http://askusaquestion.net/index.php

The site's owner, Underdog, is a good guy to deal with and he has a great Arcade with lots and lots of games that you can d/l... you'll need to register and post at least two times before you can d/l anything, but it's well worth that small effort.  :coolsmiley:

No probs Ken, thanks for the info re: the arcade.

I'm not really in need of more games just yet as I already have 360 of them installed currently.  I have bookmarked that site you mentioned though. ;)

Jeza has helped me out a few times over at SMFArcade, in fact I'm running a modded (with his help) version of one of his skins on my old version 2.16 arcade at the moment.

Also, when in the forums etc, the forum button doesn't remain highlighted,  Instead the home button is  highlighted.

Ken, I noticed you've fixed that login panel now.  O0  You still have the menu highlight problem though as mentioned in my earlier post.  If it doesn't worry you then please ignore this post.  ;)

I had a similar problem with one of my themes when I used the wrong tab code, it bugged me after a while and just had to fix it. lol..

Well now!
It has been a little over four years, so I guess it's about time for an update on this Showcase topic for my site.   ^-^

We are still using TinyPortal after all these years because it remains the best SMF portal Mod that is available... and, we are still partial to themes designed by Bloc.  O0

Over the past couple of years my activity and engagement have decreased somewhat, but we are determined to stay open and to keep using TP.
You can see the latest spec's in the OP of this Topic (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=12821.0).

Thanks, Ken, for sticking with TP. :) Always happy to get feedback on themes too. As of now I have been coding more on the extra features of the themes, than the actual themes..but I see the need for a few improvements to the CSS too.

Thanks to you for spending the time on your themes Bloc.Over the years we don't (have not) voiced our appreciation nearly enough for all of the work you have devoted to TP and to your themes.
Title: Re: Our FamilyForum
Post by: bloc on November 16, 2014, 02:51:20 PM
Thank you. :)

Its not required for me to work on themes of course.. :D but it is always nice with feedback. Unfortunately it seems several people are now regarding me and my work as "untrustworthy"..so I guess all thats left is my own joy of creating them in the first place. That will alter how much I bother to make it usable for other people, and more usable/interesting for myself. That balance have always been important..but now I feel its not anymore.

I am only mentioning this because TP is also very much such a product(userfriendliness paired with trying to be fresh and innovative) and the interest is dwindling on it. It may very well be the last TP made like this(or more likely, that TP stays like it is now). I don't think I will be inspired enough to create something for people who don't trust what I create anymore(present company excluded maybe?). Sad - but no point pretending otherwise. And while some users DO make me want to make it better, create better themes etc. it only strengthens my conviction that those who want use them WILL seek them out on my site - but I won't be "hunting them down" on other sites anymore.

... and the interest is dwindling on it.

That could be a very true statement Bloc and while I do agree with that point of view there are points that should be added... IMO
TinyPortal has been downloaded thousands (10's of thousands?) of times down through the years and if only half that number made it into an active site then that's a lot of TP's out there... a lot of TP's!

It has long been my opinion that we as a TP support site only see well under 1% of those users coming here for help, actually under 0.1% and we can naturally expect that while most of the users that we do see like TP and appreciate the help that they receive there will be a very small percentage who will be unhappy. And, we can expect that those users who are unhappy will go ahead and move on to other options at some point.
Meanwhile, all those other TP users just keep rocking on, never thinking about coming here to TP because they are busy enjoying their SMF/TP site and not breaking it and so they don't need our help.

As for the dwindling part, we can look to a number of factors that may affect that concern.
Early on when you first began to develop TP you were the only game in town unless you count the full blown CMS's that were available and to me, as someone just starting off at that point in time, TinyPortal was the only option that provided the desired result. I think that it's obvious from history of the downloads over time as well as the topic history here and over on SMF that we saw a great deal of growth early on but then, in time, several things began to happen.
Others began to develop portal mods, some even going so far as to outright copy big chunks of TP code.
SMF went through a period of great turmoil, causing many to lose interest and having a lasting effect on all of us who remain.
RL happens to all of us and sometimes that means that we don't have the time or energy to invest in online stuff and so that sharp edge of desire and creativity looses a little of it's sting.

And then, there's Facebook!!!  :tickedoff:
It is my strongly held belief that "social media" sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc.. have had a profound effect on sites that have message boards as their main communication device. We have reduced our on-line interaction to 140-character messages and pictures of our ham and egg breakfast plate , leaving little time for topics where we have to actually reply and engage in an ongoing conversation that might keep going on for a full page or more of posts and replies.

So, are we dead and dying? I don't really think so, somewhat less than we may have once been? Yes, of course we are, but I think that lots of folks still use and have faith in the great qualities of TP and will continue to do so for a long time to come.

As for the naysayers, the Trolls and the haters, as the old saying goes... "If they can't take a joke..."   ^-^

I agree about the Facebook thing - it's a really poor way of communicating with people long term. I really tire of it.

You and me both lol..I rather write a blog post somewhere than try to write something on FB. All you get are likes anywy, no-one bother to write elaborate posts. Or they write abusive comments instead :P

But I guess its no wonder..FB has such a layout that you are not encouraged to write readable and interesting stuff. Its just like SMS with a picture instead, and even more so on phones.Who want to read that more than 1 time only, and even then just barely?

I agree. I only look on FB if I am bored. Some pages just post far too much stuff and lately I think about reducing the number of pages I am interested in hearing about daily. There's just so much junk and all those stupid 'share this and you will get loads of money' links, or just outright scams.

If it weren't for it being a handy way to keep in touch with my sister I would abandon it entirely.

Google+ is better in my opinion and so far I have been careful telling it what I am interested in.

My experience with Facebook has been "off again, on again" over the years and I even deleted my account all together at one point. But, in the end I finally gave in and stuck with it because so many of my family were on it and that was/is the only place to communicate with some of them, especially some of the Grand-kids. Even so, several of my relatives have been placed in the 'don't follow' category because I get so tired of all the crap that they post, re post and share... like their dinner plate at the local Red Lobster!

I guess we're just stuck with the social media style of communication for now, but that plus texting on cell phones has caused us to actually disconnect from each other because it just takes too much time to post a message that contains more than 140 characters.

Maybe actually being kept updated and write inside the phone with an app would be make people be more inclined to write on a family type site for example. I had an idea at some point to create a portal/boardtype view site that had blog, gallery and genealogy sections. But FB is hard to beat, most people don't want the hassle of registering somewhere else, not to mention getting updates from somewhere else...an app might help, along with those features FB just cannot compete with. :) And, as I use at Blocthemes, register can be easy with FB/google/tc. login options.

But maybe its pipe-dream, maybe we all lost the race years ago, to FB and similar centralized places..

I would certainly use the Google+ login on sites. I prefer that to making yet more accounts as you say. If a site has got that I use it. I've used Facebook logins too for the same reasons. Possibly a reason to keep FB even though it's not a direct use of their services, it does make things simpler and less hassle.

I use Google+, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube, and would love and would love it if my followers (the lazy gits) could login to my site via any of those. Sadly there's no good mods out there to accomplish this, other than pay through the nose for them.

Well, I use the OneAll plugin - which have a SMF mod too - and it works just fine. It makes sense to use something like that, from people that have already done the code. The free version supports up to 2500 users.

Thanks bloc, that was one of the mods I was referring to, but after checking their site again it says "Core features, basic support by email, all social networks and up to 2,500 unique users per year"  so that's not bad at all.  I'll give it a try, cheers.  O0

It's indeed a great theme and as from December 6 it will be on my site as well.
Here in the Netherlands we first celebrate Sinterklaas on 5 december 2015 and after that we can prepare for Christmas.

Best regards,
Fred

Fred, I just Googled Sinterklaas and found This Page (http://www.whychristmas.com/cultures/holland.shtml). It sounds like a grand holiday!  O0

Should I ever have the honor to travel to the Netherlands I will make every effort to do so during the first week of December.

Yes it's a great for the children. And the presents and candy are also nice for the grown-ups! There is currently some debate going about "zwarte piet"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet)

But personally I prefer Christmas (also presents but more and better food! ;D)
