FTP is the TCP/IP standard way of transferring files across the Internet and between computers, servers, or computer to server. This is necessary for uploading files to your website.
As a webmaster, you should find yourself a good FTP program. If you cannot afford one, I recommend SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/) or Filezilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) which are both excellent and free.
FTP is an acronym for "File Transfer Protocol"
