is there a way to change the color of membergroups or boards?

hmmm, did that, but the colors only display if I look at the member list from within the admin tab. If I act like a regular forum user and click the member list button in the top navigation, the different member groups all appear light gray.

Have you looked in Admin Panel , memeber Groups , changing the color is there ..... check it out ..

What exactly are you trying to do?  Changing the colors of membergroups in Admin is for changing the color that their usernames are displayed in the online list, the list in the Info Center shown below your Forum when someone is logged into your forum.

If you want to change the colors in some location other than that, you need to ask over at SMF how to do it or see if there is a Mod that will do it for you.  Any custom theme is going to respond in the same way as the SMF Core theme in this regard.

There are a variety of Mods that change colors in different locations.  For instance, if you want to add colors to member names in their posts, you might try this one ...

If that's not what you're looking for, then I suggest you go to SMF and do a search for "color" in the modifications area as there are different Mods that do different things.
