As suggested in another topic I am wondering if people really want past versions of TP being available in the download section.

G6Cad

Voted no on the question.
The reaason is

1. Several versions have been released since then
2. As said by Zarprime, in order to support it now, we have to have it installed to be able to test things as the newer versions kind of made atleast me to forget a lot about how TP 098 worked.
3. Most support questions about TP 098 we see now are about block code and snippets, they also change a lot since tp v098, so if we have TP 098 for download, we also need to keep track of old block code and snippets and IMHO they are many outdated and impossible to keep track of since many of them arent even made by any of us here, but users that have changed or moved a way from TP.
4. To much work for a small team as we actually are in compare to the bigger software forums out there, even if they are bigger and have a huge staff, they still remove old versions for the new ones.
Simply put, we have no time and not a bigg enough staff to help the ones that download and install them to their forums.
5. new people that install and use SMF and then come here for a portal will have a hard time with what version they can download and install, we all know there arent many members that actually read what we say or search the forum, so they will download any thing and then break their forums, get upset because we have outdated versions for download etc etc.

So, no, as Zarprime say, lets see the future instead of being stuck in the past.

I also voted no.. for the reasons i stated in the other thread.

Ken.

My reasoning on this question follows along the same lines as what G6 has posted.

One of my main points would be compatibility with current versions of our Block Code Snippets as well as versions of SMF. Lately our Code Specialists have been working hard on trying to update and support our snippets and other codes to work with SMF2.x - TP1.x and needing to continue writing and updating for older versions would add to that workload for them as well as the rest of the TP Team.

As I pointed out in another post, imho keeping older versions available only makes the process of upgrading all the more painful whenever a site is finally brought up to date, because instead of making a series of 'small' updates a site would have to suffer through a 'giant leap' when they are forced at some point to make to move to newer versions... and I think we all know that would happen at some point.

No need for any of these problems, as it would be an archived version, no longer supported.  For people who still use it.  That said, I bet if someone asked for some help with a block snippet the one of the members here would still rise to the challenge as always.

Or will they now get told, sorry we no longer support that version you need to upgrade to TP 1.  :D

PS:  I obviously voted yes.  O0

definitely yes....

one of the things we (try to) do at work (non web related!) is make sure all the tools we use are recorded & archived so we can repeat the activity at any time in the future.. if a particular project is resurrected a few years down the line.

in terms of one of my websites.... for example i recently transferred hosts, it was easiest to do a fresh install of smf & TP and then overwrite the database... than to transfer all the files.

that site was on 1.0b4, as it stands currently i'd now be stuck since i cant download it for a fresh install.

(as it was i had made sure i had all the original installation packages stored locally)

I voted "It doesn't matter." I think Bloc should do whatever he wants to do. If someone is first starting out, they should probably use the newest version. Those already familiar with .9.8 (or other versions) have it in their Packages folder if they want to set up a similar site.

It is possible that people aren't aware that the files exist in the folder, though. Now they know. :-)

I think I've changed my mind a bit on this. I don't mind giving them access to older downloads, as long as it is clear that there is no support given for anything in the archived section. But on the flip side of that, I would always go along with what Bloc decides if he wanted something else.
