TP Documentation site

Welcome to the offical documentation site for Tinyportal!

Note:
This article was originally written some years ago by 'akubear' for TinyPortal 0.98 and because it contains great detail and guidance on how too work with your TP blocks we've included it here. Some of the detail has changed over the years of course, but much is still to be gained by the information here. Please take care to notice the differences between this older version of TP and your current version.

How Do I Manage My Blocks?

Ok since you have asked for a "Dummies Guide To Blocks" I have created one for you.

To create a Block you must be logged in as admin or one of the membergroups who have privilidges to manage blocks/TP

In this tutorial my theme is 'Alienation' so it may look slightly different but the menus and items in all themes will be the same basically.

Click the admin button in your top menu to begin:

Once you are in the admin panel look at your left column and locate the Tiny Portal menu section and click 'Blocks Manager' on it:

This will take you to the blocks manager screen. Look at the screen and you will notice different icons and boxes here and there.

Dont worry your server wont explode if you touch these (atleast not yet muhahaha)
So lets get a low down on a few settings here.

To edit a block:
To edit a block and change its content always use the edit icon as shown below:

clicking it will take you to the edit screen for the block (discussed later)

To delete a block:
Pressing the delete block icon gets rid of that block permanently. So only use it if you are sure you want to delete it since once its gone its gone

Screen shot above shows the delete icon.

To move a block:
In the current version of TP there are 3 basic block positions: Center, Left and right. Using the little arrow icons you can position your blocks either center left or right.

Only 2 icons are shown because your block is already positioned on the left - so you see the right and center icons for positioning. Clicking them will take you block to the desired position. (and i dont mean missionary)

Also there is a small box on the left near the block name box like shown below:

This allows you to position your block order (i.e. if its the 1st to appear or the last)
Just play around with it to learn more about it.

To activate a block:
Always remember that once your block is created it needs to be activated for it to appear on the main page or wherever you choose it to appear.

To activate simply click the green icons as shown above. To deactivate press the red one.

Adding a block
Beging by deciding where you want to place your block. Left? right? center?
In my example I am adding a left side block:

As shown in the image - in the blocks manager area near the right you will see the Add Block link. These appear for each center, left and right sides in their respective groups.

Once you click it you will be taken to a screen like this:

Depending on your settings you may or may not see this man -->  O0
If you see him reboot your PC at once. If not then continue on...
In the above screen select the TYPE of block you are trying to create.
- Does it contain PHP code? Then a PHP block is needed.
- Does it contain HTML only? then a HTMLBCC type block is neede
- Does it contain javascipt? Then a Script Block is needed.
Etc etc etc

Once you select your block type and press the button as shown you will be taken to this screen:

Here is where you name your block and also put in your block content.
Just remember certain types of blocks DO NOT have this - since they are 'predefined' blocks. Such blocks include:
- Search box
- Statbox
- themebox
and a few others...

anyways back to putting in your code and defining the name.
As shown in the picture above, specify your block name where indicated.
Then put in your code as indicated.

Setting permissions for blocks
Next thing you want to do (on the same screen) is to set permissions.
This determined WHO can SEE the block and who CANT.

In the above example those are my custom membergroups....you may have different ones in your panel depending on which you may have created.
select the ones you want to see the block by clicking the little check boxes next to them.

Then you want to set the permissions for people who are able to MODIFY the block (CAUTION: this is a partial administrative right - be careful who you give it to!! Since the will be able to delete that block as well!)

Below the permissions to see you will find the permission to alter that block settings.
Select the ones you want and then we move on.

the look of your block
here you can select how your block looks. Do you want a frame around it? Do you want to show its title? etc etc

play around with these settings to change the look and feel of the individual block.

Finally before pressing the submit button you may want that block to ONLY appear in the forum or somewhere else.
You can do so by playing around with these settings

Just experiment and you will learn.

Remember if your block dosent work as you want - give it a spanking by pressing the spanking button and delete t and you can always start over
